Severe Weather This Afternoon

There’s a good chance that you’ll run into some thunderstorms later this afternoon. And some of them could be quite strong. Maybe even severe with winds up to 60-65 mph. The Storm Prediction Center continues their level 1 out of 5 (marginal threat). We’ll see whether or not there’s an upgrade at some point today. The good news with a level 1 is the severe threat is isolated or spotty. However, an upgrade to level 2, which is certainly not out of the question, becomes a little more widespread with the possibility of storm damage.

Timeframe: From 3pm to 9pm (west to east)

Risks:

General Thunderstorm Threat: Moderate

Damaging Wind Threat: Low

Large Hail Threat: Very Low

Tornadoes: Very Low

Lightning: Moderate

Here’s the latest update from the Storm Prediction Center

Here’s how the RRFS (Rapid Refresh Forecast System) sees it playing out.

Here’s how the HRRR (High-resolution Rapid Refresh) sees it playing out.

Both are very bullish on the idea of scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and a round of severe weather. Both models would suggest an upgrade to level 2 (scattered). We’ll see whether or not the SPC pulls the trigger.
