Big storms passing through north of Philadelphia this afternoon. One tornado warning, four flash flood warnings and multiple severe thunderstorm warnings. The main batch of energy is still out to our west. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued until 8pm.

1PM UPDATE - A SEVERE T’STORM WATCH has been issued until 8pm

Here is the expansion of the level 2 severe weather risk. The SPC has lifted it north into Trenton. Judging by what the radar currently looks like to our west, it was the right move to make 👍🏻. The main concern is for strong straight-line winds. An isolated tornado is back in the forecast too. For the entire viewing area. Buckle up, this is likely to be a wild ride!

FLOOD THREAT UPGRADED - The flash flood threat has both increased in threat and expanded in coverage. Huge thunderstorms will develop later this afternoon and the target area appears to be the I-95 corridor. Urban areas, poor drainage areas and low lying areas, especially near creeks and streams are most susceptible.
Please take every warning seriously today.
Heavy Rainfall totals expected up and down the I-95 corridor later this afternoon and evening. Some areas could see over 3" of rain out of this. Even heavier amounts expected in northern New Jersey.

Flooding continues to look like a big problem today. A FLOOD WATCH has been issued for just about the entire area (except for Kent, Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May counties). Excessive runoff, rainfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour and slow moving thunderstorms will make for a seriously bad situation.

Again, all eyes on Tuesday. One of the things that we're seeing this afternoon is the very slow movement of some of these thunderstorms. Well, the atmosphere is even more juiced up tomorrow. Rainfall rates, given how much moisture will be in the air by then, will likely be near 2" per hour. So, if a storm moves this slow tomorrow, or trains, flash fooding could end up being a serious problem.
The severe weather threat is mainly for strong, straight-line winds. However, there is a low-end tornado threat as well from Trenton south into the Carolinas including Philadelphia, Wilmington, Cape May and Dover.
Please take every warning seriously tomorrow.

PLEASE SHARE - The latest computer data increases and expands the tornado threat tomorrow. A more concentrated area sets up from the Virginia Capes down to Cape Hatteras and Raleigh, NC. The slightest risk area (green) has now been expanded north to include New York City. Please take all warnings seriously Tuesday afternoon. This could be a very active day with numerous severe thunderstorm warnings, flash flood warnings and maybe even a tornado warning or two.

I wanted to break away from the severe weather threat for a moment and show you what we're missing out on. The heat across the "the Heartland" is incredible. Parts of the corn belt yesterday had heat index numbers up to 130 degrees and it was not a misprint. Dewpoints were in the low 80s! 🥵

PLEASE SHARE - There’s a low end tornado risk Tuesday from Salem, Cumberland and Cape May counties in NJ south through Delmarva. The probability is low (only a 1 or 2 on a scale of 1 to 10), but it’s worth noting. There could be just enough shear with height to produce a quick spin up. The main threats are strong, straight-line winds and flash flooding.

PLEASE SHARE - Most of this is going to fall on Tuesday. Drenching downpours developing with rainfall rates close to 2” per hour. Low lying and poor drainage flooding likely in some areas. Smaller creeks and streams could flood too. Monitor this closely if you live in an area that typically flood during a heavy rain event.

Today is the last really nice day. Humidity builds and the threat for storms increases starting late tomorrow. Big severe weather day possible Tuesday.
Turning warmer today with highs in the upper 80s. The humidity comes roaring back again Tuesday. In comes a cold front from the west and a decent low level jet and you have the ingredients for another round of severe weather. The SPC has already placed parts of the area in a level 2. Something to monitor for now.
