This was pretty neat. The cloud line stayed like this in south Jersey for hours today. To the west there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. To the east there wasn’t a patch of blue anywhere. And it just sat there.
Might not be a bad idea to take your time Sunday morning and have that second cup of coffee. Some of the rain could be really heavy! Should end quickly. But it looks like a sloppy start.

Downpours, thunderstorms and areas of flash flooding are likely up and down the I-95 corridor Saturday night. There could be a stretch here where it’s really coming down! The timing looks to be from about midnight until 8am Sunday.
As of now the heaviest rain is projected to fall in a line from Toms River to Trenton to Doylestown to Allentown, north and east.

That day 8-15 (September 18th-25th) still looks really nice for fall lovers! Some of the computer guidance has high temperatures in Philadelphia down into the low 60s!

There is a severe weather risk overnight for areas south of Dover. But it is very, very isolated. Downpours are possible too.
This is not the same kind of pattern we saw over the summer with the constant bouts of violent weather. But with that being said, one or two storms overnight could turn a little ornery.

A disturbance will swing through the southern parts of our viewing area tonight. This could trigger a couple thunderstorms and downpours that in south Jersey and Delaware.
There’s a slight chance of severe weather and flash flooding in Sussex County, DE and areas south.

Big storms firing up out west, but these will be weakening as they push east overnight. There could be a few showers west of Philadelphia (far western counties). There could even be a brief thunderstorm, but severe weather is not expected.

Rainfall totals through Friday morning. The HRRR is a little more bullish than the RRFS. It shows a few showers Thursday morning followed by downpours and thunderstorms Thursday night. The RRFS has just a few showers both Thursday morning and Friday morning and is significantly lighter. Given the high humidity levels I would not rule out anything.

A potentially historic El Niño is developing in the Pacific, and it could have a major influence on our winter. NOAA is forecasting one of the strongest, if not the strongest, in recorded history. For the northeast that generally means plenty of opportunities for storms and a much more volatile pattern overall. Especially given the eastern base warming (off the coast of Peru). But do we have the cold air? That’s usually the million dollar question with these events. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t.

There will be some cooler days here and there, but nothing sustained over the next two weeks. Or at least that’s what the modeling is showing us right now. And that’s going to be the difficult thing moving forward. In an El Niño year, and in this case a strong El Niño, it’s difficult to get long duration cool downs or cold snaps because there’s usually not much blocking in Greenland. But we’ll see. We’re moving into uncharted waters this season.
