Hurricane Season 2026

The upcoming 2026 hurricane season is predicted to be dominated by a powerful El Nino. Perhaps one of the strongest El Ninos ever in recorded history.

If you’re a snow lover, the last thing in the world you want to hear are the words strong El Nino. That’s because the overall steering current turns more west to east across the country as opposed to north south. Therefore, the deep bitter cold arctic air gets bottled up in Canada. There are exceptions like the winter of 2009-’10. But overall, that’s the general weather pattern during the winter season.

During hurricane season, however, a strong El Nino becomes a powerful ally because it increases wind shear in the gulf and Caribbean. This in turn suppresses tropical development in the Atlantic basin.

Tropical cyclones need a fairly calm atmosphere stacked vertically in order to organize. A strong wind sheared environment tilts storms apart from top to bottom. Or in other words the upper levels become displaced from the surface part of the storm. This in turn disrupts thunderstorms around the center and rips the storm apart.

This is the main reason for the lower predictions this season from the National Hurricane Center, Colorado State and AccuWeather. If for whatever reason the El Nino fails to fully develop or is not as strong as predicted, hurricane season 2026 would end up being much more active.
